Summary
Isuzu
Technical Center of America, Inc. (Isuzu
) is recalling certain 2018-2021 Isuzu
FTR and 2018-2021 Chevrolet
6500XD vehicles. A bolt on the left front steering knuckle may come loose, resulting in an increased turning radius and difficulty steering to the left.
Remedy
Dealers will replace both right and left side stopper bolt jam nuts and clean or replace the extensions, as necessary, free of charge. Owner notification letters were mailed on February 28, 2022. Owners may contact Isuzu
customer service at 1-866-441-9638. This recall is an expansion of recall 19V-467. Vehicles previously repaired will need to have the new remedy performed.

CONDITION
Isuzu
Motors Limited has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 model year F-Series vehicles. The jam nut for the steering stopper bolt on the left side may loosen and allow the bolt to back away from the steering knuckle. This could result in an increase in the turning radius of the vehicle in left turns, which could make it difficult to make sharp turns. If the vehicleโs turning radius is increased, there is an increased risk of a crash. A prior recall (19V-467) was conducted to address this issue, but we have identified this condition on vehicles that were remedied in that campaign as well as those that were produced after a change in production intended to prevent the condition.
CORRECTION
Isuzu
dealers will replace both right and left side stopper bolt assemblies, which include new Spiralock Nuts, and torque the new Spiralock Nut to a new specification. This service will be performed free of charge.
VEHICLES INVOLVED Involved are 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 model year FTR vehicles.
NOTE: It is not necessary to open a TAL case or generate a health report in order to submit a warranty claim for this campaign.
Important: Dealers are to confirm vehicle eligibility prior to beginning repairs by using the Isuzu
Vehicle Inquiry System (IVIS).
For dealers with involved vehicles, a report of involved vehicles containing the complete vehicle identification number has been or will be provided. Dealers will not have a report available if they have no involved vehicles currently assigned.
PARTS INFORMATION
An initial supply of Stop Bolt Assembly Kits will be shipped to dealers. Additional Stop Bolt Assembly Kits may be ordered from American Isuzu
Parts Distribution Network (AIPDN).
Please refer to your โinvolved vehicles listingโ before ordering parts. Normal (non-emergency) orders should be placed on a Stock Order. In an emergency situation, parts should be ordered on a VOR (Vehicle Off Road) Order.

Chronology of Defect / Noncompliance Determination (amended)
573.6 (c) (6) (7)
Describe the chronology of events leading up to the defect decision or test data for the noncompliance decision: (2000)
In 2019, Isuzu
conducted a safety recall to address field reports of loose steering stopper bolts in FTR model trucks. This recall, 19V-467, was launched in June 2019. The remedy in that recall was to clean the bolt, change the jam nut from a Grade 5 to Grade 8, apply Red Loctite 263 to the bolt, and reinstall with a higher torque specification. The same changes were adopted on the FTR production line in June 2019.
In April 2021, Isuzu
received the first Field Product Report (FPR) of this condition in this model vehicle since launching the 2019 recall. The vehicle involved was one produced after the production line change that was made in June 2019. Isuzu
launched an investigation, including researching and identifying warranty claims that may relate to this condition. Isuzu
โs warranty review indicated that the first relevant warranty claim was dated January 20, 2020 and the last was dated September 28, 2021; the majority of the relevant warranty claims were between January 2021 and the end of September 2021.
Some of these reports involved vehicles that had been remedied in the safety recall that launched in 2019, and some involved vehicles that were built after that safety recall.
Isuzu
started to collect parts from the field of failed and non-failed parts; all of the non-failed parts and most of the failed parts were from vehicles built after the recall countermeasure was introduced in the factory for newly produced vehicles. Isuzu
studied these returned parts. Isuzu
also conducted a study of varying amounts of Loctite applications on bolts with varying amounts of oil contamination. Isuzu
concluded that, when the Loctite is installed in an adequate amount on a clean bolt, the Loctite application results in breakaway torques that exceed the material properties of the bolt, meaning that the bolt will not loosen. However, the breakaway torque varies with the amount of Loctite applied and the degree of cleanliness of the bolt at the time of the Loctite application.
As a result of its detailed and thorough study of the returned parts, Isuzu
concluded that the recall countermeasure (which was also introduced into production) was not sufficient to prevent the left-side steering stopper bolts from loosening. Isuzu
believes that a combination of human errors in cleaning the bolt and in installing the Loctite caused these failures.
Isuzu
has received a total of 16 reports of a loose stopper bolt involving 14 unique VINs. Isuzu
is not aware of any crashes or injuries associated with these reports.
On 10/29/2021, Isuzu
made a determination to conduct a safety recall to address the issue. Because the production change was identical to the recall remedy for recall 19V-467, and is now believed to be prone to the same risk of human error, Isuzu
will recall all the vehicles included in recall 19V-467, as well as newer vehicles built after the recall countermeasure was introduced into production, for installation of the new Spiralock Nut. This means the vehicle population in this new recall will include all MY 2018 through 2021 FTR vehicles.

For now, the Interim Owner Letter will encourage owners/drivers to pay special attention to the turning radius of their vehicle and allow additional clearance when making sharp left turns. If at any point before they receive the second owner letter (parts available), an owner believes their vehicle is having a problem with its turning radius during left turns, the Interim Owner Letter encourages the owner to promptly contact their Isuzu
dealer to schedule an appointment. In that event, you (dealers) are to inspect whether there is a problem with the stopper bolts in the vehicle. If it is determined that a stopper bolt is causing a problem with a vehicleโs steering, you (dealers) are to contact the Isuzu
Technical Assistance Line to obtain instructions for a temporary repair, and then implement that temporary repair per those instructions (NOTE: Warranty reimbursement details will be outlined in the instructions at that time). However, please note that owners will still need to bring their vehicle back to their Isuzu
dealer after they receive the second owner letter notifying them that the remedy parts have become available. INTERIM OWNER NOTIFICATION INTERIM OWNER NOTIFICATION WILL BEGIN DECEMBER 29, 2021. Please ensure that all appropriate personnel within your dealership are aware of this new Safety Recall โ FTR Steering Stop Jam Nut Replacement.

Douglass Road, Suite 100, Anaheim, CA 92806 *1-866-441-9638 DOC ID: SS_V2106_20211105 STOP SALE AND DELIVERY โ SAFETY RECALL Date: November 05, 2021 Subject: Stop Sale and Delivery for Upcoming Safety Recall Affected Models: 2018-2021MY Isuzu
FTR Vehicles To: Isuzu
Dealer Principal, Sales Manager and Service Manager Effective immediately, stop the sale and delivery of affected vehicles in your inventory, even if a customer has purchased an affected vehicle. We are in the process of taking steps to address a safety-related defect in these vehicles. Federal law prohibits the sale and delivery to customers of any vehicle containing a safety defect. You must not deliver any covered vehicles to customers until after the vehicle has been remedied. WHAT IS THE CONDITION? Isuzu
Motors Limited has decided that a defect, which relates to motor vehicle safety, exists in certain 2018, 2019, 2020 and 2021 model year FTR vehicles. (A prior recall (19V-467) was conducted to address this issue, but Isuzu
has identified this condition on vehicles that were remedied in that campaign as well as those that were produced after a change in production intended to prevent the condition.) WHAT WE WILL DO We are preparing a new service procedure and procuring parts to repair these vehicles. You will receive another notice regarding owner notification and campaign bulletin release as soon as the schedule is available. WHAT YOU SHOULD DO For affected vehicles in dealer inventory, open a repair order referencing this Stop Sale and hold the vehicles until further notification is received. We regret any inconvenience which this action may cause you. Sincerely, Isuzu
